The goal of this UX project is to revitalize a struggling bookstore's online presence and improve its user experience to regain popularity and increase book sales. The bookstore recognizes the need to adapt to changing consumer preferences and leverage the digital landscape to engage with customers effectively. By pinpointing key goals and objectives, the project aims to transform the bookstore's website into a neighborhood hub for books and literary discovery, making it easier for customers to engage with and browse titles online, improving the user-friendliness of the site, promoting in-store events, and boosting online book sales, particularly through the introduction of book bundles.

Diesel Bookstore, based in San Diego, is an independent bookstore that has established itself as a beloved literary institution in the community. Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Del Mar, Diesel Bookstore has been serving book lovers since its inception in 1989. With its commitment to promoting literature, fostering a sense of community, and providing a unique browsing experience, Diesel Bookstore has become a cherished destination for locals and visitors alike.

As an integral part of the UX project for Diesel Bookstore, my role encompassed active participation in all project steps, fostering inclusivity and ensuring a holistic approach to the design process. I collaborated closely with the team, leveraging my expertise in UX design and research methodologies to contribute to each stage, ensuring diverse perspectives were represented.

PROBLEM

The bookstore's website faces several UX challenges. Navigation is problematic, requiring users to go back to the homepage after viewing a novel page. The site lacks clear and efficient pathways for users to browse and make purchases. Additionally, issues such as slow loading times, incoherent images, and poor organization of information contribute to a subpar user experience. Accessibility features, mobile optimization, and a lack of filtering options further hinder the usability and accessibility of the website. Addressing these challenges will be crucial in improving the overall user experience and attracting more customers to the bookstore.

INSIGHTS
Analyzing competitors like Hennessey + Ingalls provides valuable insights to make Diesel Bookstore more popular through UX design. To enhance its popularity, Diesel can focus on creating a visually appealing homepage with engaging visuals and clear navigation. Making information easily accessible through clear and intuitive organization, as well as bolded clickable text, will improve user experience. Diesel should strive for high-quality design and consistent visuals throughout the website, emphasizing professionalism. By implementing user-driven advertisements that highlight book clubs, events, and promotions, Diesel can appeal directly to its target audience. Prioritizing user-friendly search functionality with filters and optimizing the website for mobile devices will further enhance usability. By organizing information effectively, utilizing colorful visuals, and ensuring accessibility, Diesel can create a more popular and engaging online presence.

SOLUTIONS

To address the identified problems, UX research and UI design can improve navigation, streamline online shopping, promote in-store events, ensure visual design consistency, optimize accessibility and mobile experience, and utilize user testing for iterative design improvements. These strategies will create a user-friendly and engaging website, boosting popularity and customer satisfaction.

PROBLEM 1
The UX problem with the homepage is that it fails to provide a clear vision of the company. Visitors to the website are unable to quickly understand the core offerings, values, or unique selling points of the company. The lack of clear messaging and visual elements on the homepage leaves users confused about what the company does or represents. This results in a missed opportunity to effectively communicate the brand identity and engage users from the moment they land on the website.

SOLUTION 1

I integrated visual elements: Integrate appropriate visual elements such as images, videos, or illustrations that align with the company's brand identity and enhance the messaging. Visuals should be engaging, relevant, and help reinforce the company's vision.
Simplified Navigation: Design a clear and intuitive navigation structure that allows users to easily explore different sections of the website. Ensure that important pages, such as About Us or Books, are easily visibleĀ from the homepage, providing users with a deeper understanding of the company.

PROBLEM 2

Limited Customization: Google Calendar provides several customization options, such as event colors, reminders, and sharing settings. If Diesel's Bookstore fails to utilize these customization features or restricts user access to them, it can limit the user experience and personalization options.

SOLUTIONĀ 2

Enable Custom Event Colors: Diesel's Bookstore can allow users to assign custom colors to different types of events or categories. This empowers users to visually distinguish between various events and personalize the calendar according to their preferences and location of the event.

PROBLEM 3

Unresponsive or Difficult-to-Navigate Design: If the "About" page is not mobile-friendly or lacks clear navigation elements, users may find it challenging to access the information they seek. A cumbersome design can lead to frustration and hinder users' ability to engage with the content effectively.

SOLUTION 3

Simplify Navigation: Review the navigation structure of the "About" page and streamline it for improved clarity and ease of use. Use clear labels and intuitive icons to guide users and make it effortless to navigate through the content.
Clear Information Hierarchy: Establish a clear hierarchy of information on the "About" page to guide users through the content. Use headings, subheadings, and visual cues to indicate the structure and importance of different sections, enabling users to quickly find the information they need.
Enhance Scannability: Break up long paragraphs into shorter, concise sections with informative headings. Incorporate bullet points, lists, and bolded keywords to improve scannability. Users should be able to quickly grasp the main points of the "About" page by skimming through the content.

Challenges
